Texas Plates, Tolls & DMV
Veteran specialty license plates, toll discounts, and Texas DMV resources for military members.
The Texas DMV offers military and veteran specialty license plates including Disabled Veteran (DV) plates, Purple Heart, Legion of Valor, and Medal of Honor plates. The first set of DV plates costs $3 with no annual registration fee. DV plates may include the International Symbol of Access and can be personalized.
Form VTR-615 is the application for Disabled Veteran license plates and parking placards. You must have a 50%+ service-connected disability (or 40%+ for lower-extremity amputation) verified by a VA Regional Office letter. Have your doctor complete the Disability Statement, then submit the form with a $3 fee to your county tax assessor-collector. Plates can be personalized for an additional $40.
Since 2012, TxDOT has waived tolls for eligible veterans on TxDOT-managed toll roads across Austin, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Vehicles must display a qualifying Texas specialty plate — including Disabled Veteran (50%+ service-connected), Purple Heart, Congressional Medal of Honor, or military valor plates. No separate application is needed beyond obtaining the qualifying plate through TxDMV.
