Veterans Land Board

Texas Veterans Land Board loan programs for land, homes, and home improvements.

About the Veterans Land Board

The Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) provides unique benefits exclusively to Texas veterans, helping them purchase land, homes, and start businesses. Established in 1946, the VLB is one of the most comprehensive state-level veterans benefit programs in the nation.

Land Loans

The Texas Veterans Land Board Land Loan Program is a unique, Texas-only benefit that helps eligible veterans and military members finance the purchase of land. Through this program, qualified applicants can borrow up to $150,000 to buy at least one acre of land in Texas, often with competitive interest rates and a relatively low down payment, starting at five percent.

Married veterans who each qualify individually may be able to combine their eligibility to purchase the same property, allowing for a higher borrowing limit, up to $225,000—while still meeting the minimum acreage and down payment requirements.

The program is designed to be veteran-focused, offering an alternative to traditional land financing. Funding for the program comes from state-issued bonds, which are paid back through loan repayments, with administrative costs covered by modest fees built into the loan structure.

Home Loans

Eligible Texas veterans and military members can use the Veterans Land Board home loan program to buy a home with competitive fixed interest rates and flexible down payment options, including the possibility of little or no money down. The program offers fixed-rate loans with terms of 15, 20, 25, or 30 years, with loan amounts available up to $806,500.

Veterans who have a VA service-connected disability rating of 30 percent or higher may qualify for additional interest rate reductions, helping lower monthly payments and overall borrowing costs.

Home Improvement Loans

Moratorium — Not Accepting Applications

The Veterans Land Board also supports Texas veterans, military members, and eligible spouses by helping them improve the homes they already own through the Texas Veterans Home Improvement Program. This program was created to make home repairs and upgrades more affordable by offering interest rates that are typically lower than standard market loans.

Qualified applicants may borrow up to $50,000 with repayment terms ranging from 2 to 20 years. Smaller loan amounts between $7,500 and $10,000 are also available with terms from 2 to 10 years. Veterans who have a VA service-connected disability rating of 30 percent or higher may qualify for reduced interest rates, helping lower the overall cost of improvements.

The program does not require a down payment, but applicants should expect certain upfront costs during the application process. These include a flood certification fee, a title search fee, and standard closing costs associated with the loan.
